Sri Lanka Smacks Akon’s Video!

The Sri Lanka government took offense at Akon’s brand new video titled “Sexy Chick”! In fact, things are so hostile towards the rapper that he had to postpone his April tour to the country. So what sparked off this row? The video in question features scantily clad women gyrating to Akon’s groovy beats in front of a Buddha statue! The song is by David Guetta and features Akon. Some 200 protestors were down at Capital Maharaja, the promoters of the Akon tour. They threw stones at the office in an angry reaction to the video.

The angry group of people carried banners declaring “Stop Akon Now”! They vandalized offices and hit out at cars parked near the building. A spokesman for the Sri Lankan government said that the video "triggered a lot of disappointment among Buddhists all over the world." The hatred for the video also spilled over online. Facebook acted receptacle to quite a debate heating up. There are more than 12000 members on the “We Hate Akon” page! While this is quite funny and shocking at the same time!

Akon had no other option but to come out and speak about it. He said, "I was not aware that the statue was even on the set of the video until now. I would never desecrate anyone's religion or religious beliefs." Sri Lanka has a predominantly Buddhist population. More than 60% of the population belongs to the Buddhist camp. Akon added, "I myself am a spiritual man, so I can understand why they are offended. But violence is never the answer and I am disheartened. "
